Psoriasis is a common but chronic skin condition caused by an overactive immune system. Psoriasis affects all races and both sexes but is more common in people between the ages of 15 and 35. In this condition the skin cells multiply at rates up to 10 times faster than normal. Symptoms include inflammation, development of flaking and thick, white, or red patches of skin.
Types of Psoriasis
Psoriasis more typically occurs on the scalp, nails, and joints. It can also occur on palms and soles of the feet. The types of Psoriasis are as following:
This very common form of psoriasis is characterized by dry, raised, red patches(plaques) covered with silvery on the skin. These plaques can be itchy and painful. It causes dry, raised, red skin lesions (plaques) covered with silvery scales. These plaques can be itchy or painful and can occur anywhere on the body.
Guttate Psoriasis commonly affects children and young adults. The lesions in this are not as thick as typical plaques.
It mainly affects skin folds like the armpits, skin in the groin, under the breasts and around the genitals and, is characterized by smooth red patches of inflamed skin.
It occurs as widespread patches or as smaller patches on hands, feet or fingertips. It’s marked by pus-filled blisters and severe itching.
This is a rare type of psoriasis that can cover the whole body. Symptoms include redness, peeling rashes with severe itching.
The exact cause of psoriasis remains unknown. The only thing clear is that an overactive immune system is responsible for the lesions. Psoriasis is not contagious. However, the condition is known to be hereditary in nature. Causative factors might include: family history of the condition, viral or bacterial infections, obesity, smoking, stress and trauma, certain medications, such as lithium, beta-blockers, anti-malarial drugs and iodides.
Treatment of Psoriasis
Treatment psoriasis mainly aims to reduce the rapid production of new skin cells and the resulting scaling. Since psoriasis isn’t curable, the treatment is focussed on providing symptomatic relief. At Skinzest & Hair Clinic, we offer three main types of psoriasis skin treatments:
Creams and topical ointments can effectively treat mild to moderate psoriasis. Some typical medications provided are :Topical corticosteroids, Vitamin D analogues, Anthralin, Topical retinoids; Calcineurin inhibitors; Salicylic acid, coal tar and moisturisers.
It uses natural or artificial ultraviolet light to reduce symptoms in combination with some medications or alone. Sunlight, UVB phototherapy, Narrowband UVB therapy, Goeckerman therapy, Photochemotherapy or psoralen plus ultraviolet A (PUVA) can are the options for light therapy.
Severe cases of psoriasis are treated with oral or injected medicines. They are mostly used in conjugation with other treatments. Retinoids, Methotrexate, Cyclosporine are some drugs that can suppress or alter the immune system to help reduce the scaling of the skin.
