Dandruff is the flaking that occurs when the scalp sheds dead skin cells. While some amount of flaking is considered normal, excessive dandruff is considered as a skin disorder.
When the skin cells renew and shed the dead skin at a very rapid rate it results in excessive dandruff. There are several reasons that can lead to this skin condition. Skin condition like seborrheic dermatitis, psoriasis, eczema, fungal infection of the scalp and contact dermatitis can all lead to excessive dandruff.
Excessive dandruff is marked by large, noticeable flakes, dry and itchy scalp. Some patients with serious cases also experience skin irritation and a rashes on the face as well. If the patient has tried over the counter products- shampoos , creams etc. , and still hasn’t experienced any relief , the patient must consult an experienced dermatologist to receive proper guidance.
Dandruff can affect anyone from children to adults, but there are certain factors that are likely to increase the chances of excessive dandruff. Young adults with oily skin are more prone to excessive dandruff. Adults with neurological diseases, such as Parkinson’s disease, are more likely to develop seborrheic dermatitis and dandruff. Patients with compromised immune system also sometimes suffer with excessive dandruff.
A dermatologist examines the scalp thoroughly to rule out other skin conditions and arrive at an exact diagnosis.
The first line of treatment for dandruff is use of anti-dandruff shampoos. These anti-dandruff shampoos are available over the counter and do not require any prescription. Main ingredients of these shampoos -coal tar, zinc and salicylic acid can help reduce the symptoms of itchy and dry scalp. If these anti-dandruff shampoos do not help with the problem , then the patient is advised to see an experienced dermatologist.
