Causes of Eczema

The exact cause of Eczema remains unknown. But there are a few factors that are known to contribute in the occurrence of Eczema amongst adults and children. These factors include genetics, environment, an already existing immune system disorders, allergies to some food items or other allergens or a skin condition that may make the skin prone to an eczema outburst.

Diagnosis and treatment:

Diagnosing the exact type of eczema forms a crucial part of the treatment. At Skinzest, we conduct Patch Testing to understand the exact cause of the condition. Eczema treatment has several tiers to it and requires strict maintenance in order to prevent any incidents of flares in the future.

  • Topical steroids – This is the most common and widespread treatment option offered by dermatologists. Active eczema or flare up is marked by red, itchy skin with blisters. Topical steroids are used to soothe the inflammation in to top layer of the skin. Topical steroids are and their dosage is decided by an experienced dermatologist depending upon age, severity of eczema and the area affected. We at Skinzest, educate our patients about the correct usage and any side-effects of the steroids.
  • Emollients – Moisturising and keeping the skin hydrated is the only way to manage eczema. An emollient is a type of moisturiser used specifically for skin softening. The outer layer of skin is damaged in Eczema thus making the underlying skin prone to water loss.Dry skin tends to become more itchy. In most case of eczema emollients may be the only treatment needed.
  • Steroid-alternative treatments-Topical calcineurin inhibitors (TCIs) are another type of topical treatment that works to calm the inflammation in the top layers of skin. TCIs are safe, non-steroidal alternatives without many side-effects unlike steroids. The most common side effect of the TCIs is burning sensation at the site of application. These treatments are safe to be used for both adults and children.
  • Antihistamines– Eczema is not due to a histamine spike in the skin, but antihistamines have been seen to help patients with Eczema. The sedating effect of antihistamines helps reduce the itching among the patients, thus indirectly helping the patients with better management of this condition.
  • Other alternative treatments-are phototherapy, bandages and immunosuppressants.
