Ingrown toenails occurs because of the penetration nail plate edges into the soft tissue of the toe. It usually starts with a slight pain that later becomes infected. Recurrences are fairly common in those people who have ingrown toe nails.

Removal of the affected toe nail is a relatively comfortable procedure. Once the toe is made numb with an anaesthetic injection, the nail margin is removed and the nail bed and root are then excised to reduce chances of recurrence. Recovery usually takes 1-2 weeks but routine activities can be resumed within a few days.
To avoid ingrown toenails it is advised to wear properly fitting shoes and to trim the toenails straight across and not too short.
